Characters ;;

Guys: The obvious main character, who is falsely charged for murder and sent to prison. Guys can be seen in a variety of ways starting from determined, stubborn and strong-willed. Before being sent to prison, Guys lived with his mother and father and often committed petty crimes, primarily shoplifting. He lacks formal education, proven by the fact he has a very difficult time reading, but he otherwise has a vast amount of knowledge about society and how it works. Although Guys suffers an endless amount of abuse in the game, he is very far from weak, and therefore, easily sticks up for himself and remains defiant. His personality seems to be versatile enough for him to get along with all the prisoners, but he does happen to lose his temper quite a bit. However, despite having various ups and downs, Guys is, in fact, very optimistic, a possible result of his youth.

Guildias: Guildias is a police detective, who, unbeknownst to everyone around him, kidnapped a boy named Myuca and later forced him to dress as a girl to settle possible suspicion when the two were out in public. At first, Guildias' intention for kidnapping the boy is never directly stated, but through the man's various delirious states, it becomes obvious Guildias was very much in love with the Myuca and undoubtedly had a sexual relationship with him. Because he is prone to delirium, Guildias suspected Guys either witnessed Myuca's kidnapping or had direct plans to help free the boy from his imprisonment. In a fit of rage, Guildias accidentally strangled Myuca to death. Later on, he also murdered a man named Jared, who was a private investigator hired by Myuca's family and was already suspicious of Guildias for the kidnapping. To clear his name, Guildias framed Guys for the murder of Jared.

During the course of the game, Guildias visits Guys a number of times, simply to abuse him and seemingly to cast over his pain and regret of murdering Myuca. During these visits, Guys begins to witness Guildias' instable personality, especially when it comes to the idea of Guys possibly being released from prison. To prevent this, Guildias threatens Guys' friends, who were supposed to give witness statements to exonerate the boy during his first retrial. Later on, when realizing Lusca may have even more evidence to prove Guys' innocence, Guildias attempts to murder Lusca by shooting him. He also eventually visits Guys for a final time to torture and humiliate the boy as a way to force him to give up on another retrial.

Despite his efforts, when Guys is granted a second retrial, Guildias loses his sanity in the courtroom and is escorted out by guards. His fate is debatable, as it is never stated in the game, but in the OVA, he commits suicide. In the bad endings where Guys does not live to prove his innocence, Guildias' is never mentioned, therefore he may or may not have eventually lost his sanity in those scenarios.

Lusca: Although notoriously known as an alcoholic, Lusca was once a very highly respected and accomplished lawyer, who eventually turned to drinking after his life became a bit complicated. He was hired by Guys' family for the sole reason his fees were no longer expensive, but due to his alcoholism, he cared very little about Guys' case and did little to help the boy prove his innocence; however, after Guys was sent to prison, Lusca was paid a bit more money by the boy's family so he could visit him a total of 12 times in order to possibly gather new evidence. At first, Guys and Lusca do not get along at all, but through Evan, Guys discovers that Lusca was once a successful lawyer and that Evan and him used to work closely together before breaking off communication. (See more about this in Evan's profile.) Slowly, Lusca and Evan begin speaking again, and soon, Lusca starts taking Guys' case more seriously and drifts away from alcohol.

Lusca eventually gathers enough evidence (most notably witness testimonies from Guys' friends) for the court to grant a retrial, but their first attempt fails when Guys' friends claim on stand they cannot remember any details. Lusca, knowing the witnesses have been silenced by Guildias, loses the trial but continues to take the case seriously, working with Guys to gather even more evidence. When it becomes obvious the two are making progress, Guildias attempts to silence the lawyer by shooting him, but nonetheless, Lusca survives and does not lose his determination.

Depending on the scenario, Lusca may lose interest in the case all together (therefore prompting a bad ending to ensue), but it also possible for Guys and him to develop a romantic relationship two ways. The first is where, despite Lusca's greatest efforts, Guys fails to come up with evidence himself and ends up attempting an escape on New Year's Eve and is shot down by guards. While Lusca somehow manages to be with the boy as he dies, he later visits the boy's grave, subtlety confessing his love and promising to avenge his death by proving Bollanet, Guildias and Durer's guilt and freeing his friends in prison. In a not-so depressing ending, Lusca and Guys will end up moving in together, become lovers and work together to prove the innocence of Evan, Vallewida and the rest of Guys' friends. However, no matter what scenario, so long as Guys proves his innocence, it is safe to assume Lusca regains his status as a successful lawyer.

Durer: Durer is the warden of the prison, who is undoubtedly the most twisted and demented of all the characters in Enzai. He is the son of Bollanet, a high government official, therefore the abuse he inflicts on the prisoners is hidden from the public. While Durer certainly takes turns on most of the prisoners, he pays particular attention to Vallewida, but later on, Guys, too. Any personal information about Durer is unknown, thus making him somewhat of an enigma. He's an obvious brutal and heartless sadist, but some of his more complex emotions seem to come out when abusing Vallewida. He often gets frustrated with Vallewida for not remembering his past, for Durer knows Vallewida previously hid information that could prove how Bollanet, Guildias and himself were a part of the large wheat smuggling conspiracy. When abusing Guys, however, Durer shows less of a complex side and more of his meaningless sadistic side, especially in the scenario where Guys becomes his sex slave.

If Guys manages to clear his name and gather evidence proving Bollanet's involvement in the wheat smuggling operation, it can be assumed Durer, too, loses his position as warden and is thrown into prison himself.

Belbet: Belbet used to work with a man named Jake Darling, who somehow discovered Bollanet's crime and was murdered for his knowledge. Due to circumstances just before Jake's death, Belbet began feeling an intense amount of guilt, and thus began faking insanity so he could be thrown in jail. While imprisoned in the game, Belbet refuses to take showers or have his hair cut, resulting in many prisoners finding his stench and appearance enough to fear and alienate him. Many perceive him as being sincerely insane, as he normally talks as though he were a part of royalty. Guys, who is initially afraid of Belbet and at first refers to him as the "beastman," eventually realizes Belbet is harmless and that he has a deep penchant for chocolate. While talking to Guys on separate occasions, Belbet changes his story as to why he supposedly lost his throne: he fell in love with a princess from an enemy country, he criticized chocolate made from another country and a war ensued, etc.

Later on, Belbet's insanity appears to become somehwat sincere, and after being forced to bathe and have his hair cut, he becomes delirious and gives Guys a message relating to Jake. Before Guys has a chance to fully understand the message, however, Belbet is shot by guards when attempting to escape from the prison. In one scenario, Guys manages to unravel Belbet's message with Lusca help, and together, the two find Jake's corpse along with written proof that can convict Bollanet.

Io: It is very rare that Io is seen by himself, as he is usually tagging along wherever Jose goes. Io remains completely passive and submissive throughout the game, and is bullied regularly by Jose and his other followers. It is obvious Io will, in fact, do whatever Jose orders him to do, as proven by Io setting up Guys to be raped and later having sex with Guys under Jose's command. Surprisingly, Io admits to being sent to prison for murder, but Guys never learns what circumstances were involved with the crime. Even though Guys is friendly to Io, he is still easily annoyed by the boy's lack of a backbone and decides never to stand up for him. Evan is the only one who takes the time to comfort and care for Io, treating him very much like a younger brother.

Because it is impossible for Guys and Io to develop a romantic tie, Io's fate is only revealed in the Shion scenario, where he becomes an apprentice to an organist and apparently remains in a relationship with Jose.

Bollanet: Bollanet is Durer's father, and holding a very high position in the government, he is able to protect both himself and his son (and possibly Guildias, too) from all types of retribution. In return, Durer assists his father in killing any prisoners who may have information that could convict the two of them later on. Bollanet used to be in the French army, where he served as some sort of commander and constantly abused his position by reselling wheat he had stolen from the poor and having civilians killed for the no reason at all. Vallewida was apparently a part of his army, but because Vallewida cannot recall where he stored valuable information relating to the conspiracy, Bollanet, like Durer, often becomes overly frustrated with the inability to beat the information out of the man.

If Guys manages to clear his name and gather evidence proving Bollanet's involvement in the wheat smuggling operation, Bollanet is thrown in jail himself; however, in the scenario with Guys ends up with Shion, Lusca and Evan expose Bollanet for election fraud.

Evan: Before landing in prison, Evan was once a highly accomplished journalist as well as the best friend of Lusca. The two often worked together to expose and convict criminals, but once Evan unveiled information relating to Bollanet's conspiracy, he broke off all contact from Lusca in hopes it would protect his friend. However, knowing Evan had information, Guildias and Bollanet still managed to frame Evan for some kind of crime and throw him in prison. In the game, Evan reveals to Guys he actually has a short sentence in prison, but given the knowledge he has concerning Bollanet, he is likely marked for death.

At first, Evan's upbeat personality annoys Guys, but the two eventually get along fairly well. Because Evan seems to have treasured his brother when he was younger, he often treats Io as though he were his younger sibling. He constantly takes care of him and even stands up for the boy as well. Evan and Vallewida also seem to have a very close relationship since both have knowledge concerning the truth on Bollanet.

Evan's fate, like all the other characters, is based on exactly how Guys manages to clear his name and which character he ends up with romantically. In the Shion scenario, Evan seems to return to journalism and begins working alongside Lusca again, but in the scenario where Evan and Guys become lovers, the two become carpenters together. In one of the "bad" endings, Evan is murdered by Durer to conceal Bollanet's crimes.

Vallewida: Once a soldier who served under Bollanet, Vallewida both witnessed and participated in the man's conspiracy, and at one point, hid information capable of revealing Bollanet's crimes. However, because he now suffers from selective amnesia, he cannot recall the so-called "crime" that landed him in prison, nor the location of the information on Bollanet. Fearing that the information may be obtainable regardless if Vallewida is alive or not, Bollanet and Durer have no intention of killing him until they manage to get Vallewida to remember where the information is located. Feeling intensely guilty for his involvement in the wheat smuggling and murdering of civilians, Vallewida often has a very depressed, quiet persona to him, but remains civil and polite to Guys. Guys also observes Vallewida in "ghost mode," where he stays mostly unresponsive to torture and even communication. On a few rare occasions, Vallewida shows a more protective, violent side to him, presenting aspects relating to his years as a soldier.

The ending in which Vallewida and Guys manage to become lovers, Vallewida gives him a wooden crucifix. Once Guys is released from prison, Lusca discovers that inside the crucifix is where Vallewida hid the information on Bollanet. With it, Lusca and Guys manage to prove Vallewida's (and Evan's) innocence, allowing them to be released from prison. During the passing time, however, Guys works in a grocery store, but soon, Vallewida and him meet up once again. In the Guys/Shion ending, Vallewida is released from prison and becomes an artist, seemingly not maintaining any sort of romantic relationship. In one of the "bad" endings, Vallewida is murdered by Durer to conceal Bollanet's crimes.

Jose: Jose was once a part of a gang, and although he likely committed illegal crimes in the group, he assisted the private investigator, Jared (the man Guys is accused of murdering). Before being thrown in jail for raping a nun (who he claims was "asking for it"), Jose received Jared's personal diary, which he cannot read because he is illiterate; however, later on in the game, Jose realizes the diary may contain information valuable to Guys proving his innocence.

In prison, Jose seems to retain affiliation to a "gang," as he is normally accompanied by followers, particularly Io, who he regularly takes advantage of and often pressures to do humiliating things just for his own personal thrill. Depending on the scenario played out, Jose's personality seems to differ in each. In many, Jose's main goal is to rape Guys, and eventually, having sex with Jose becomes inevitable in order for the boy to get Jared's diary into his possession. It is worth noting, however, that a softer, more humorous side of Jose is revealed in the scenario where Guys and him become romantically involved.

If Jose and Guys do, in fact, become lovers, Jose becomes a private investigator himself with Guys as his assistant; but, if Guys ends up with Shion, Jose goes into his private investigating career alone, while still remaining in some sort of a relationship with Io.

Shion: Shion is a "hidden character" in Enzai. In order to come even remotely close to interacting with him and eventually getting his ending, strict decisions must be made at the very beginning of the game. Being a "hidden character," Shion does not relate to any of the bigger storylines in the game, but still possesses one of his own. Shion was imprisoned for accidentally dropping a toolbox on a friend's head, thus killing him. After this occurred, Shion seemed to shut down completely as far as emotions went, barely reacting to any situations, but still retaining somewhat of a friendly and polite personality.

When Guys and him first begin to talk on a more personal level, Shion shares his dreams of wanting to settle down with a girl, get married and open a restaurant; but as the two continue to interact, their feelings for each other deepen and Shion finally breaks out of his emotionless shell, enabling the two to share a more romantic connection. When Guys is released from prison, he waits for Shion to be released himself, and together, open a restaurant, where they reunite with their friends for a special dinner party. (Exactly how everyone is released is never stated, thus creating a huge plothole in this ending.)
