Visual Novel Game ;;

Originally released in Japan in 2002 by Will and Langmoar, Enzai was later translated into English and released in the United States in 2006 by JAST USA. In Japan, the game became quite popular itself, prompting releases of drama CDs, artbooks and other merchandise not normally seen for a simple visual novel game. In 2004, two OVA episodes were made, which you may read about here.

As far as gameplay goes, Enzai is a typical visual novel, where you simply read the dialogue of characters and also the narration from Guys; however, Enzai is fully voice acted, and the Japanese dialogue does stay properly intact for the English release. There are a total of ten endings to the game, which are determined by the decisions you make as the player. Each decision usually affects how you interact with another character, and if decisions are made in a particular order, Guys will begin to develop a romantic tie to a certain character. In some cases, though, if you make "bad" decisions, it may affect Guys' sanity and lead to a morbid ending.

Not every character in the game has an ending. For example, although Io can be seen as a main character, he does not have an ending and thus there is no possible way for Guys and him to become lovers. Provided below is a quick rundown of the ten possible endings (7 "good" endings and 3 "bad" endings):

Ending 1 - Default: This is a default ending, meaning the choices made by the player were a combination that did not match any of the other endings. Of course, this one is happy in the sense that Guys is released from prison, but he does not become romantically involved with any of the characters.

Ending 2 - Lusca's v1: Although morbid, this one ironically still classifies as a "good ending." It consists of Guys being shot down by the prison guards after attempting to escape in the snow on New Year's Eve. Lusca somehow winds up being with Guys as he dies and swears to avenge the boy's death by finding the real answers to the circumstances surrounding his imprisonment and the other inmates' as well.

Ending 3 - Shion's: In this ending, Shion and Guys become romantically involved and open a restaurant together. Being one of the happier endings, this one features all the other characters being released from prison and reuniting for a chipper evening at Shion and Guys' restaurant. This ending is criticized for its lack of explanation on how the other characters manage to be released from prison, although one can assume evidence exonerating them just popped up on its onsie.

Ending 4 - Vallewida's: Romantically linked to Vallewdia, Guys is released from prison months before him and passes the time by working at a grocery market. Previously having promised to meet up again, however, Vallewida and Guys bump into each other by sheer coincidence while walking the streets and are assumed to stay together thereafter.

Ending 5 - Lusca's v2: One of the longer endings, this one involves Guys and Lusca becoming lovers and working together in law, where Lusca continues to keep his respectable reputation as a lawyer and Guys becomes his assistant. This ending also features the two moving in together and having sex for the very first time.

Ending 6 - Jose's: This ending features Jose being released from prison before Guys, but having formed a romantic tie, the two promise to reunite once Guys is released himself. When he finally is released, Jose has prepared a party for him with his friends, and the two decide to go into a private investigating career together.

Ending 7 - Evan's: Having formed a romantic bond with Evan, Guys urges Lusca after being released from prison to help him prove Evan's own innocence. When Lusca and Guys finally do, Evan and Guys manage to reunite and later work in construction together.

(Bad) Ending 8 - Durer's: Having become a major interest of Durer's, Guys suffers more abuse from the man than in any other scenarios, which later leads to the boy losing most of his sanity and being forced to become Durer's sex slave.

(Bad) Ending 9 - Wish For Death: After eavesdropping on a conversation between Vallewida and Evan, Guys learns how Guildias, Durer and Bollanet work together to imprison people on false charges and later sweep all signs of abuse in the prison under the rug. Devastated, Guys loses his sanity and later witnesses the deaths of both Evan and Vallewida. He begins wishes for his own death as Durer approaches him.

(Bad) Ending 10 - Execution: This ending features Guys losing hope in both Lusca and himself after the first trial. While helping to bring in magazines from outside, Guys impulsively decides to attempt an escape by running past a guard and head further outside. However, he is shot down by the guard during his attempt and thereby killed.
