Guildias Analysis ;;

Even though I hold a grudge against the Enzai OVA nowadays after playing the game, I still cherish it sentimentally, especially because it helped me love my favorite character, Guildias, even more than I do now. Yes, Guildias is my favorite, so okay, I am probably wickedly biased when it comes to praising how wonderful and precious and adorable he is as a character. But, I would like to think it is all those things that made me love him so, because he is a very deep character to look at and analyze. What struck me the most about Guildias in the first place, is the amount of torment, delirium and regret he suffers from and with throughout the storyline. His first mumble of Myuca’s name broke my heart, and later on, his incomplete whisper, “Myuca… with these hands…” made me want to cry (seriously, too, so stop laughing at me). I also believe that although Guildias basically has Durer and Bollanet on his side as far as the ability to cover up personal crimes, Guildias sincerely felt completely alone when it came hiding Jared’s murder and trying to get past what he accidentally did to Myuca.

See, as far as we know, Guildias apparently never shared with Bollanet and Durer the fact he kidnapped Myuca, murdered Jared and framed Guys. I endlessly question why he didn’t, for Guildias aided Bollanet in arresting completely innocent people and fabricating evidence so they could be thrown in jail. You would think Bollanet and Durer would owe Guildias something after all that. Certainly, if Guildias had been upfront with his crime to the two, they could have helped clear his name, but instead, Guildias took everything into his own hands, as though it were a very personal matter and as though he was slightly ashamed of his crimes, especially when it came to his relationship with Myuca. Unlike Bollanet and Durer, who strictly enjoy abusing men and boys for sadistic reasons, Guildias truly loved Myuca and probably knew his feelings would make no sense to his two partners in crime.

Guildias’ sexuality also seems the clearest to me out of all the characters in the game. As revealed during the second trial, Guildias once had a girlfriend, and their relationship was seemingly deep enough for the nameless lady to have a knife specially engraved for him as a present. Guildias is, in fact, a straight male, but he is also a pedophile, who is attracted to young boys and possibly young girls as well. I believe the latter because even though he forced Myuca to dress as a girl to cover suspicion while in public together, I also feel he did this for personal thrill. Yes, his relationship with Myuca was unhealthy, as the sexual aspect was obviously nonconsensual, but as Guildias alludes to in a state of delirium, he had a rather unconventional relationship with his mother, who was blind and relied on him for just about everything. He also seems to have had a rather unstable relationship with his father, who basically abandoned Guildias after his mother died. Guildias also states that after being adopted, he began taking on habits of his father, which were probably rather negative.

Guildias seems almost incapable of having a balanced, healthy, normal relationship with anyone, for he is always trying to recreate an old one. In the OVA, the animators chose to design the portrait of Guildias’ mother as looking basically identical to the way Guildias’ ex-girlfriend looks in the game (and the OVA, too, where she is seen in the background for a couple of moments, but never speaks). It is subtle, but I believe they are hinting he dated this woman for the mere fact she resembled his mother. And, maybe I’m just being over-analytical, but Myuca’s blonde hair also seems to hint at a resemblance to Guildias’ mother, too. While he used his previous girlfriend as an attempt to recreate his relationship with his mother, he also used Myuca, and later on, he uses Guys as a way to cast over his pain of murdering Myuca and also possibly try to rebuild the relationship he had with the other boy as well.

Having taken care of his mother for the majority of his childhood, as an adult, Guildias seems to desire relationships where he must be relied on so he can tend to and take care of the other person. What prompted the breakup between Guildias and the nameless adult woman might have been his realization she was not dependent on others, thus causing Guildias dissatisfaction.

However, children are dependent, and I believe this may have been one of the many reasons he began seeking a relationship with a young child. Despite being imprisoned in Guildias’ household, Myuca did seem to rely on Guildias, for the two managed to stay together for a long period of time, during which Guildias, without a doubt, had to care for the boy like a parent.

Guildias’ mother’s death and his father’s desertion prove he fears his loved ones leaving him, thus resulting in him not only going to extremes and kidnapping and imprisoning Myuca, but also murdering him. The OVA plays this out by having Guildias strangle the boy in a fit of jealous rage, for he fears Myuca is somehow planning an escape. I also believe this is why during Guys and Guildias’ final scene together in the game, Guildias loses his temper and tortures the boy to an almighty extent. While Guildias is still haunted by Myuca’s death and uses Guys to numb this pain, it is obvious Guildias feels some sort of twisted affection for Guys as well. Guys, to Guildias, is like a possession: he can do whatever he pleases to the boy, see him almost whenever he wants, and because Guys is in prison, Guildias assumes he can never leave him. However, when Guildias discovers Lusca may have the ability to prove Guys’ innocence, Guildias not only fears he will be discovered as the real murderer of Jared, he also fears Guys will be released from prison, thus leaving him. He attempts to strangle Guys to death in their final scene together, just like he did to Myuca.

As painful as it is to believe Guildias truly does commit suicide, I actually do not find it out of character in the OVA. Guildias was mentally ill, making him completely instable at the end of all things. After losing his mother, Myuca and then Guys, Guildias’ sanity completely slipped, and it is far more likely he killed himself rather than ended up in prison with Durer and Bollanet. I am almost grateful, really, because his fate extends the fact that although Guildias is meant to be a villain, he is also very sympathetic, and while his violent actions are not justifiable, they are certainly understandable.
